Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to engage in temporary
employment directly related to their major area of study. Eligible students can
apply for up to 12 months of OPT either before completing their academic
studies (pre-completion) or after (post-completion).

USCIS

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis for one full academic year at a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified institution.
  • Employment must be directly related to your major field of study.
  • Have not utilized 12 months or more of full-time Curricular Practical Training (CPT) at the same education level.

Application Steps:

  1. Obtain a Recommendation from Your Designated School Official (DSO): Request your DSO to recommend OPT in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and endorse your Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status.”
  2. Prepare and Submit Form I-765: Complete Form I-765, “Application for Employment Authorization,” available on the USCIS website. Include the required filing fee and supporting documentation as specified in the form instructions.
  3. Submit Your Application to USCIS:  You can file your application online or by mail. Ensure USCIS receives your application within 30 days of your DSO’s recommendation in SEVIS.
  • Pre-completion OPT: Apply up to 90 days before completing a full academic year, but employment cannot commence until after completing the academic year.
  • Post-completion OPT: Apply up to 90 days before your program end date and no later than 60 days after completion. USCIS must receive your application within 30 days of your DSO's recommendation in SEVIS.
  • USCIS will issue a Receipt Notice (Form I-797) upon receiving your application.
  • Processing times can vary; it's advisable to apply early.
  • Upon approval, you'll receive an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
  • You may begin employment only after receiving the EAD and within the authorized dates.

Maintaining Status During OPT:

  • Report any changes in your name, address, or employment to your DSO within 10 days.
  • Ensure employment is directly related to your major field of study.
  • Avoid exceeding 90 days of unemployment during the OPT period.

STEM OPT Extension:

  • If you hold a degree in a qualifying Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field, you may be eligible for a 24-month extension of your post-completion OPT.
  • Eligibility criteria include employment with an E-Verify-enrolled employer and adherence to specific application timelines.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows F-1 students to engage in off-campus employment that is integral to their academic curriculum, such as internships or practicums. To apply for CPT, follow these general steps:

1. Verify Eligibility:

  • Maintain valid F-1 status.
  • Complete at least one full academic year of full-time study in the U.S.
  • Ensure the proposed employment is directly related to your major and integral to your curriculum.

2. Secure a Relevant Position:

  • Obtain an offer letter from an employer detailing the job title, description, duration, and location.

3. Consult Your Designated School Official (DSO):

  • Discuss the CPT opportunity with your DSO to confirm it meets institutional and immigration requirements.

4. Enroll in the Appropriate Course:

  • Register for a course that incorporates the practical training component, such as an internship or practicum course.

5. Submit a CPT Application:

  • Complete any required institutional forms, which may include employer details and course enrollment verification.
  • Provide your DSO with the employer's offer letter and any additional documentation.

6. Receive CPT Authorization:

  • Upon approval, your DSO will update your SEVIS record and issue a new Form I-20 with the CPT authorization.
  • Do not commence employment until you have received this authorization.

Part-Time vs. Full-Time CPT:

  • Part-time CPT: Up to 20 hours per week; typically allowed during the academic term.
  • Full-time CPT: More than 20 hours per week; may be permitted during academic breaks or if required by your program.

Impact on Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  • Accumulating 12 months or more of full-time CPT makes you ineligible for OPT at the same educational level.

Maintain Status:

  • Continue full-time enrollment during CPT, unless it's your final term or otherwise authorized.
  • Report any changes in employment or personal information to your DSO promptly.
