TOEFL

The TOEFL iBT® test, delivered via the internet, measures ability to use and understand English at the university level. It evaluates how well a candidate can combine reading, listening, speaking and writing skills in English to perform academic tasks. The test is conducted by ETS- Education Testing Service, Headquarters; Princeton, New Jersey, USA.

More than 35 million people from all over the world have taken the TOEFL® test to demonstrate their English-language proficiency. The average English skill level ranges between Intermediate and Advanced.

IELTS assesses all four modules of English communication — reading, writing, listening and speaking, and is designed to reflect how a candidate use English at study, at work, and at play, in his new life abroad.

TOEFL iBT Test Sections:

Sections Time Limit Questions Tasks
Reading 60–80 minutes 36–56 questions Read 3 or 4 passages from academic texts and answer questions.
Listening 60–90 minutes 34–51 questions Listen to lectures, classroom discussions and conversations, then answer questions.
Break 10 minutes -- --
Speaking 20 minutes 6 tasks Express an opinion on a familiar topic; speak based on reading and listening tasks
Writing 50 minutes 2 tasks Write essay responses based on reading and listening tasks; support an opinion in writing.

The test may include extra questions in the Reading or Listening section that do not count toward score. These are either questions that enable ETS to make test scores comparable across administrations or new questions that help ETS determine how such questions function under actual testing conditions.

Scores of the test are based on the performance of the candidate on the test date. A candidate must answer at least one question each in the Reading and Listening sections, write at least one essay, and complete at least one Speaking task to receive an official score. The scores are rated on four scaled sections and a total score:

SKILL SCORE/RANGE LEVEL
Reading 0–30 High (22–30) Intermediate (15–21) Low (0–14)
Listening 0–30 High (22–30) Intermediate (14–21) Low (0–13)
Speaking 0–30 Good (26–30) Fair (18–25) Limited (10–17) Weak (0–9)
Writing 0–30 Good (24–30) Fair (17–23) Limited (1–16) Score of zero(0)
Total Score 0–120

A candidate receives an email of test scores in approximately ten days after the test date. In addition, a candidate can log in to TOEFL iBT account on the TOEFL® registration website and click “View Scores” on home page to see scores. A candidate can also download and print a PDF copy of test taker score report from account.

Printed score reports are sent to score recipients approximately 13 days after the test date. The scores are valid for two years and can be sent to other institutions or agencies during that time.
